The answer is ... crawfish mounds. Also known as crayfish, and mudbugs, among other local names I am sure. The things are everywhere down here. At soccer games the three that aren't playing, play "kick the crawfish mound". I'd explain the rules but hopefully you can make a pretty good guess by that insanely cryptic title! We aren't quite low enough to have them in our yard but just a stones throw away there are yards that you could feed your family on for a month.
We have heard that all you need to do is stick a hotdog in the mound and the crayfish will grab on to eat it and then, voila, you've got yourself a tasty little snack. So far we have not gone harvesting ourselves. About a year back we went to get a po boy from Peck's Seafood (a must eat around the corner from our house) and the boys were so adorable that the owner gave them each a hot boiled crawfish to try. They LOVED them! He even taught them how to suck the heads (brains), yuck. Apparently, yum. I didn't try.
If you have no idea what I am talking about then you don't read our blog enough to care that you don't know what I am talking about. If you do then you are one of our 6 devoted fans and might be considered a stalker. No one guessed so no one can win and I am certain that now that you know the prize you are pretty glad about that.
Google it with your kids. There are some pretty fun images. My next hope is to remember where we were that I saw the alligator warning sign for this little ditch. I am always wishing I could drive and take pictures at the same time. I have had to swerve countless times to miss alligators crossing the road and it still strikes me as extremely unnatural. I suppose the road and the big red speeding bullet (aka our van) are what is unnatural to the gator out for a stroll and some sun. Ahh the south.
