It is important to me to teach my children about serving others. Perhaps even more important is that I teach them to serve without judgement. It is so easy to write a check or look down on another as lesser because they need help or do not have we think they should.
One of the moms in the local homeschool community has arranged for the children to gather at a local center to help sort food donations. They go every Friday for a few weeks a couple of times a year, in conjunction with the local food drives. They work hard for two hours each time and are able to see the fruits of their labors as families enter and are able to collect food and clothing.
I am grateful for private organizations that quietly engage in helping others. It is a gift to serve and being on the receiving end is nothing to be ashamed of. Nothing is commercialized. No one is trying to get a vote or be seen. There is no hidden agenda creating a need for dependence. It's just people helping people on a small and local level, but in a very real way that makes a huge difference.
I pray that my children will seek these quiet opportunities wherever they are and whatever they do with their lives.
