A Most Horrible Mom Moment

The children attended a homeschool science day yesterday at a fabulous museum in Milwaukee. They had a full schedule of classes plus some free time to explore and were most jubilant upon arriving home.

It's times like these when I wish there were 7 of me living in a super suit somewhere; one to listen to each child (5) because, let's be honest, those that didn't get to go are suddenly needing all my attention too, 1 to continue cooking dinner, and one to listen to Sam. The math doesn't add up you say? 5+1+1=7, but if there are 7 in your super suit then where is the real you?

In the bubble bath of course!

Anyhoo, I did my best to listen, and cook, and manage tantrums, and not call for "silent mode"(it's awesome!) because I was going to short circuit. My best was not good enough yesterday.

Sweet, sweet Jacob dropped something and started to cry. He was very upset and saying, "I worked so hard on that and now its half gone!"

I chimed in, in a not so patient or loving way, that it wasn't that big of a deal; there was some left and he needed to stop throwing a fit. All of this would have been better had I gone to him and put my arm around him of course, but who had the time. I wish I would have made it. It wasn't nice or pretty but I felt justified not being compassionate mom with all the chaos instantly overtaking the house.

After the situation diffused a bit (and Daddy helped him wipe up and glue things back together) he came to me and said, "Mom, I made this for you. It's my cheek scrapings which have my DNA in them. We studied our DNA today during one of our classes, and I wanted to give you this vial on a string as a necklace so you could always have me with you."

Holy Cow! If I could have that moment back again I would. And probably 9 million others that seem so unmanageable and irrelevant at the time. My buddy hindsight sure does pack a wallop.

So sorry my little foctiporcoon (fox+octopus+porcupine+raccoon=foctiporcoon) and Jacob+vial full of cheek scrapings=the sweetest thing ever.
