Halloween

I am clueless as to why my children look forward to Halloween more than anything else all year. Okay, I do get it; buckets full of candy, playing dress-up, seeing friends, trunk r treats with sugary refreshments, and on and on with the sugar. I could do without the holiday myself. So, for my children (insert your best dutiful mother sigh here), I go with it. From pumpkin and ghost placemats with matching tablecloth, to ghost soup and homemade rolls for dinner, and on to more sugar than I'd care to allow them in a year (let alone a few days/weeks), I get out my happy Halloween face and they love it.

This year we had horrible sickness and weren't even sure we'd be able to participate. The boys were well enough (technically; they could stand and had been feverless for at least 24 hours) to participate in the trunk r treat activity. Somebody, somewhere should have figured out how to generate some cash flow off those things, really. Ellie was well enough to join them for trick or treating with their favorite friends. Addie was not well enough to go at all, and was inconsolably upset about it. Eventually I got smart and asked her if she wanted to take a picture with them before they left and then take a bath. Ah, the bath; a magical cure. Before whisking her away to the spa, I saw the pink sky and we got a picture of it for Ellie. We are certain it was a gift for her. Of course Ellie saw it too while out trick or treating, how could someone so purely fancy miss a sky like that?!

The Monday after, for FHE (Family Home Evening) everybody chose a door to be behind while Addie tricked and treated from her siblings candy buckets. Then they sat and gorged while taking turns sharing favorite gospel stories with pictures from the gospel art picture kit. It was so fun.

As for me, I am learning that anything can be fun with children; especially Halloween :)

And now for the whiny moment. My baby (alright, I know she'll be 3 in 3 months, but come on give me a break) is wearing the little tiger costume I made for Zackary way back when he was 2 in Rhode Island; you know, in ancient times. That cute little orange sweat outfit, some cheap orange fabric scraps, a little batting, and some innocent black felt sure can make a person wonder where the time has gone. All four have worn it, along with the ultra-cute baby jack-o-lantern one I made for the 'baby's first Halloween' milestone. Again, with the orange baby long johns and felt, add a little elastic and batting for the stem hat and oh how adorable! But now the harsh realization that, in deed, I will be starting a 'grandchild' tote. Okay, I'll stop. It sure does sound like it's time for me to have another baby, doesn't it? Anybody got one they want to send over?

but the brandma stage is purely wonderful... something to look forward too. I've had my grandma box for years and years - mostly with books.
